Meetings, projects, personal errands, does a glance at your calendar leave you overwhelmed?
You are not alone! Between our personal and professional lives, we pack a lot of activity into our daily schedules. To successfully manage our busy lifestyles we must maintain a certain level of physical energy. Fortunately, choosing the right foods can help you boost your energy and knock out your to-do list instead of being knocked out by it.
The Quick Fix
When faced with yet another task, most of us have been guilty of drinking another cup of coffee or grabbing a sugary snack from the vending machine. The good news, the caffeine in that coffee and the sugar in your sweet treat will give your body energy. The bad news (and you knew it was coming, right?) the energy from caffeine and most simple carbohydrates (not including fruits, vegetables, and dairy products) provides a quick fix that does not last long, and relying too much on caffeine and added sugar does not help your health.
The Long-Term Approach
The key to making your energy last is choosing foods that take longer for the body to digest. Foods high in complex carbohydrates provide significant amounts of protein and fiber and are better choices than many of our current go-to snacks. And don’t worry; you need not swear off sweets and caffeine altogether. Enjoy them sparingly and opt for healthier snacks and meals for energy to power you through your whole day, from work to play.
Nutritious Foods to Fuel You
Keep in mind that complex carbs are just a few options, you are sure to find some other healthy foods you will like too. If you have food allergies or specific dietary needs, you can always swap these foods out for alternatives to enjoy the same energy-boosting benefits.
Whole grains like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, and whole-grain bread
Dark, leafy veggies like spinach
Seafood (fish and shellfish)
Nuts or nut butters
Yogurt or Greek yogurt
What you drink matters, too. Good old-fashioned water is the best beverage choice for hydration and energy. Hint: Pieces of fruit are a healthy add-in for more flavorful water.
